In my, Speak Life post, I urged everyone to consider the words they were speaking everyday! We discussed how our words had the power to uplift people and to crush their spirits! I also reviewed some practical methods in which we can Speak Life.
One notion we have yet to discuss, is: To Speak Life into others, we must first have life within ourselves!
Matthew 15:18, states, ” But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart.”
One of my friends from this Seeking You community, mentioned in one of her comments, that she is part of a 30 day challenge. The radio is challenging listeners to listen to their station for 30 days.
I remember when I was about 18 years old, I decided to listen only to Christian music. I omitted all the other types of music. The results were astounding. It reconditioned my mind with positive thoughts. As they say, good in- good out and, unfortunately, garbage in-garbage out.
I became that person who saw the silver lining; a lot more positive and optimistic. There was a lot that I did not allow myself to take in. I was like a spiritual vegan (well maybe that was a little too cheesy, anywho…). If it contained negative lessons, I rejected it.
Hebrew 4:12 tells us, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” The word of God is Life!
I am, in no way stating that we must live in a bubble and only listen to Christian music. I do, however, believe we should assess the sources of our nutrition.
- Listen to music, words, messages that are positive in nature- what we listen to, has a tremendous impact on us.
- Learn verses that pertain to your struggle. For example if you struggle with negativity, search for verses of the bible that will help you combat those thoughts. If worry is your struggle, learn verses that addresses worries.
Then, every time a worrisome or negative thought presents itself, replace it with a verse from the bible. Jesus did that after he had finished fasting and the spirit led him to be tempted. Every time the enemy challenged His thoughts, he rebutted with a verse. Finally the Spirit left.
- Surround ourselves with people that are positive- This can be a tough one for some. “Well, Rose, I’ve known Betsy since High school…Its just that she has been going through so much. She’s a really a nice person. She just needs someone to talk to”; or “Sandra… Sandra is my cousin, she has done so much for me. I can’t abandon family.” We do not need to give up on them altogether. But we must not allow them to feed our spirits with negativity.
We must choose who and what we listen to- wisely!
Life is a journey. We are constantly working to improve who we are. Christianity does not mean that life becomes easier. We must continue to feed ourselves proper Spiritual nutrition to grow!
Let me know what you think. Agree or disagree, share your experiences, thoughts, or concerns. If there is a verse or song, in particular that helps you- please share.
